Some nights my body was exhausted, but my mind wouldn’t stop. Bills, applications, my child’s needs, what I should have said, what might happen tomorrow. If you know that feeling, this post is for you.
Here is the gentle wind-down that helps me. It isn’t perfect, and it doesn’t work every night. But it helps more often than not.
1. Put your worries on paper
An hour before bed, I write down everything on my mind. Then, next to each one, I write one tiny thing I can do about it tomorrow, or “not mine to carry tonight.” Paper holds it so my head doesn’t have to.
2. Lower the lights and the noise
Dim the lights. Put your phone away, or at least away from your bed. Scrolling feels like rest, but it often keeps the mind racing.
3. Breathe slowly for two minutes
Breathe in for four counts and out for six. Longer out-breaths tell your body it’s safe to slow down.
4. End with gratitude
Name three small things that went okay today. A warm meal. A kind message. A moment of laughter. Small is enough.
If it keeps happening
I share lived experience, not medical advice. If sleepless nights or heavy feelings go on for weeks, please talk to a doctor or counselor you trust. Asking for help is strength.
